central axis (noun, pl. central axes) – the main, central part along which other parts, such as branches or lobes, are arranged; e. g., (1) the trunk or main stem of an abundantly branching, fruticose thallus; (2) the dense central cord, which forms a core within the main thallus branches of Usnea.
