Crozier
crozier (noun, pl. croziers) – hooks formed during the growth of some (but not all) dikaryotic hyphae, ensuring that two different nuclei are carried along into the newly formed hyphal tip cell: (1) the apical cell grows into a distinct hook with one nucleus following into the growth of the hook, migrating into the tip; (2) the second nucleus remains at the base (the stalk of the hook); (3) the two nuclei divide mitotically and the daughter nuclei collect along apically at the bow of the hook; (4) new cell walls are inserted, segregating the two apical nuclei within one newly formed apical cell; (5) at the base of the hook the stalk and the tip merge by locally confined dissolution of the cell wall; (6) as a result the new basal cell now also contains two nuclei. This process is typically observed in ascogeneous hyphae of ascomycetes and functionally similar to clamp connections of basidiomycetes.
