gametangiogamy (noun,no plural) – a process of sexual reproduction characterized by the fusion of two entire gametangia. In ascomycetes haploid hyphae differentiate into the gametangia, these gametangia then fuse and the fusion cell either develops directly into an ascus or grows into an inconspicuous, often short lived dikaryotic mycelium, the ascogeneous hyphae, which in turn then form the asci.
