polymorphic (adjective) – with various forms, assuming different morphotypes; (1) if applied to taxonomy it is often implied that polymorphic taxa develop different morphological adaptations as a result of living in a habitat that is subjected to environmental changes, cf. polymorphism; or (2) as applied to thallus parts implying that particular structures on the same thallus coexist in different form or shape, e. g., like unbranched, simple rhizines growing side by side with moderately or even strongly branched, bristle-like rhizines.
