scattered (adjective) – discontinuous and not evenly distributed, i. e., not regularly dispersed; either referring to the aggregation of structures, e. g., (1) widely dispersed areoles or squamules; (2) separate and widely distant branches, or to the position of individuals of a population throughout a habitat or range, e. g., crustose thalli scattered all across a cliff, pendulose thalli scattered throughout the canopy of a forest, etc.. Related terms: dispersed, diffuse, continuous, disjunct.
