thalloconidium (noun, pl. thalloconidia) – a somatic (= asexual, vegetative) dark brown, multicellular propagule with a distinctly layered wall directly arising from a thallus (e. g., in Umbilicaria) or prothallus (e. g., in Protoparmelia, Rhizoplaca and Sporastatia); a thalloconidium is not, strictly speaking, a conidium because it is neither formed on a conidiophore nor is it derived from a conidiogenous cell; instead it is a kind of thallospore. This is:part of thallus surface. Kind of:upper surface structure.
