dehiscent (adjective) – rupturing, splitting open, breaking apart; referring to asci that release their spores when breaking apart, a process that often occurs at the ascus apex and is then frequently accompanied by a forcible, "explosive" ejection of the ascospores (ascospore discharge; e. g., bitunicate, or lecanoralean asci), less frequently the ascus wall disintegrates without force (e. g., prototunicate asci).
