Stroma
stroma (noun, pl. stromata) – a compact mass or matrix of vegetative fungal hyphae in or on which fruiting bodies are formed (both including or lacking parts of the host or substrate), sometimes hardening and thus forming a sclerotium. Stromata often envelop a group of several ascocarps; they are frequently blackish or carbonaceous, but sometimes also loosely organized. Most generally referring to any somatic growth containing numerous, especially perithecioid ascocarps.
