Primary thallus subunit
primary thallus subunit (noun, pl. primary thallus subunits) – subunits of crustose, foliose and fruticose thalli: (1) areoles, (2) squamules, (3) lobes and (3) branches; these subunits may again be subdivided into secondary subunits such as lobules, secondary lobes or secondary branches. The way this segregation is organized may follow a particular pattern and subunits are either closely aggregated or distant to one another. Whenever possible, only general patters are described here. The different subunits are treated later, among the three major growth forms under the headings crustose, foliose and fruticose growth morphology.
